More than 70,000,000 AK47's have been produced worldwide since 1949. This is mainly due to the methods used in its construction wherein the mettal is stamped rather than milled making it easy and cheap to produce in large quantities. It could be field stripped without using special tools; as there were very few moving parts in its gas operated firing mechanism. This made the AK a very robust weapon that could withstand a lot of hard use and mishandling, increasing its popularity. Many variants of it have been produced adding such features as a bayonet or a folding stock.
